Stop the Sad-Monster and Experience Joy

This time of year can be hard, can it not?

The days are getting shorter. The weather's getting colder. And the looming holidays don't always feel as holly-jolly as we'd like.

Every year I notice my body trying to go into a slump this time of year.

I FEEL it! Like a sad-monster is sitting on my shoulders. 

I'm on a short girls-trip with my daughter in New Orleans. Last night we went out to celebrate Halloween.

I pretended I was 24 and danced to loud music and shouted conversations with random strangers until my voice was hoarse.

When it all got to be too much, I indulged my inner introvert by finding a tucked-away chair on the side of the dance floor. 

And I people-watched. 

Do you know what I saw?

I saw people seeking connection. Scanning the crowd - looking for eye contact... Someone who would notice them and look at them like they matter.

Several people noticed ME (even though I was trying to be invisible) and checked that I was ok. 

I even got a Halloween lap dance from a skeleton (simultaneously traumatizing and endearing) - who wanted to "cheer me up".

I woke up this morning feeling a little melancholy...

...then I read a post from my friend Freddy Jacquin about giving people 'Unconditional Complements' and 'Random Acts of Appreciation'.

And I thought about last night when my sadness lifted the instant I started LOOKING OUT instead of looking in. 

I am blessed to have lots of effective tools to stop sadness, but sometimes I don’t use them. Because that sad-monster gets so heavy I forget… or refuse - I’m not sure which. 

I’m getting out of my comfort zone by mentioning it here because I know I’m not the only person with a sad-monster this time of year. 

So I’m giving you a challenge and a gift.
